Course Competencies - Semester One

Assesses student goals and outcomes for each Applied Arts course. Examples of student work are
provided for each course assignment with references to art theory and design concepts covered in
the learning modules. Program enrolled students take four foundation APA courses combined with
English Composition and Literature 1. APA courses introduce students to basic design concepts,
Macintosh operating software and Adobe PhotoShop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PageMaker,
Wacom Drawing Media software.

All assignments are computer based integrating concepts of graphic design, basic design, color
theory, digital drawing, and digital photography with Internet technologies. Art, design and software
terminology are introduced with class critiques teaching students interactive communication skills.

Course Objectives:
APA 111 Color and Design 1 - VIEW -
1) Learn to use the Macintosh Computer operating software and the Adobe Illustrator software.
2) Learn basic design elements; unity, balance, texture, etc., and relationships to composition.
3) Explore basic design concepts facilitating art idea translation into pictorial computer images.
4) Develop art terminology with tests on art terms and evaluation of design images at critiques,

APA 121 Graphic Design 1 - VIEW -
1) Understand basic design elements and their importance in graphic presentation.
2) Understand the principles of structure as they apply to advertising design and layout.
3) Learn relationships between layout design; photography, type, drawing and illustration.
4) Learn the developmental processes from thumbnail sketch to a finished mechanical.
5) Involvement in class critiques as a participant and to work with group criticism.
6) Exposure to forms of graphic design. Discuss quaility and analysis of professional layouts.
7) Gain knowledge of Macintosh computer systems and Adobe PageMaker software.

APA 151 Digital Drawing 1 - VIEW -
1) Develop understanding and sensitivity to digital drawing materials and Wacom drawing tools.
2) Understand and control of line and value usage as a means of exploring drawing surface and the illusion of three dimensional space, form, and volume.
3) Develop perceptual and conceptual capacities, and a disciplined hand through class assignments.
4) Explore various media and methods of composition while obtaining a basic visual vocabulary.
5) Gain knowledge of Macintosh computer systems PhotoShop Design software.

APA 161 Digital Photography - VIEW -
1) To understand the function of the major controls on your camera.
2) To understand the relationship between lighting effects and the proper film exposure.
3) To learn to take good quality photographs.
4) To learn how to use the computer to scan, digitize and manipulate images.
5) To create black and white digital prints from your negatives, CD or digitized files.
6) To display your photographs in a professional print and electronic portfolio.
7) Gain knowledge of Macintosh computer systems and Adobe PhotoShop software.
